MANILA — Local government units (LGUs) of Metro Manila have agreed to deputize the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to enforce anti-jaywalking ordinances within their jurisdictions, following a meeting of the Metro Manila Council (MMC) on Tuesday.

“The deputization means MMDA anti-jaywalking teams can apprehend jaywalking violators not just on major roads in the metropolis but also on roads listed as Mabuhay Lanes,” the MMDA said in a statement on Wednesday.

MMDA personnel will undergo a seminar on the respective anti-jaywalking ordinances of LGUs.

The mayors of Metro Manila have yet to sign the MMC resolution that deputizes the MMDA to enforce anti-jaywalking ordinances.

The MMC, the policy-making body of the MMDA, consists of the 17 mayors of Metro Manila.

The MMDA earlier said it is eyeing to file charges against pedestrians apprehended for jaywalking who fail to settle their citation tickets.

The names of violators who fail to pay the fines or undergo community service will be included on the NBI’s alarm list to compel the offenders to settle the penalty.

The agency enforces its own anti-jaywalking policy, wherein violators are issued citation tickets with a corresponding PHP500 fine.

Jaywalkers have an option to pay the fine or render community service.
