PNP secures Eastern Visayas sports meet

PALO, Leyte — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has deployed 246 policemen to Ormoc City to help secure the 9,516 delegates in the week-long Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) meet.

On top of the policemen as security contingent, the Philippine Army and force multipliers also sent about 542 men to further strengthen the security around the city, said PNP Eastern Visayas Regional Director Dionardo Carlos in a statement issued Monday.

Carlos said policemen were deployed in 27 playing venues and 13 billeting areas around the city to provide security to the athletes and to all visitors.

“We observe all necessary preventive measures in order to avoid any untoward incident in the conduct of the sports meet. We also encourage the public and all the participants to report any unusual activity or suspicious person that may cause disorder of the event,” he said.

The school-based sports event opened in Ormoc City on Sunday. One of the highlights of the opening is the skydiving demonstrations jumps by the PNP’s Skydiving Team led by Carlos.

EVRAA is the biggest sports event in the region and participated by athletes from 13 schools division in six provinces.

Athletes will be competing in archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, billiard, boxing, chess, dance sports, football, futsal, gymnastics, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, wrestling, and wushu.
