More buses deployed due to MRT shutdown

MANILA — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will deploy additional buses for passengers affected by the maintenance shutdown of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) during the entire Holy Week.

The DOTr said on Monday 160 more bus units were given special permits by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to transport passengers along the MRT line, in addition to the 140 units deployed earlier.

These buses will be operating from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. along the MRT line from North Avenue to Taft Avenue and vice versa from April 15 to 17 and April 20 to 21. The fares will be based on the MRT fare matrix.

The buses will have staging areas at West Avenue corner EDSA in Quezon City and Roxas Boulevard corner EDSA in Pasay City.

DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade appealed to bus operators to support the EDSA Bus Augmentation Program by providing additional bus units as the daily ridership of MRT-3 reaches an average of 320,000 to 350,000 passengers.

“To our bus operators, you can provide significant assistance to our commuters if you take part in this program. Let us work together in providing alternative transportation to commuters during the maintenance of the MRT-3,” Tugade said.

MRT operations are suspended from April 15-21 for maintenance works.
