MANILA — More than 4,000 persons have been arrested for violation of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gun ban, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Monday.

“As of today (Monday), our continuing campaign against violators of the Comelec-imposed election gun ban has resulted in the arrest of 4,566 offenders and the confiscation of 3,807 firearms, 256 grenades, 500 explosive devices, 32,000 rounds of live ammunition, and 1,554 other deadly weapons,” PNP chief, Gen. Oscar Albayalde told reporters in a press briefing.

The mid-term elections will be held on May 13 but the gun ban will last until June 12, according to the Comelec.

Albayalde said they will be deploying 75 to 80 percent of all their personnel, augmented by some 40,000 troops from the AFP, to secure the forthcoming polls.

“As the campaign period for the midterm election enters the final stretch, the PNP will be making the necessary adjustments to beef-up election security and law enforcement operations particularly in enforcing the nationwide election gun ban and operations against private armed groups, gun-for-hire syndicates, and criminal organizations that pose a threat to peaceful polls,” Albayalde said.
