Domestic helpers in Western Visayas get P500 pay hike this month

BACOLOD CITY — The wage increase for domestic workers or “kasambahay” in Western Visayas is expected to take effect this April after the National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC) affirmed the latest wage order on April 12.

Wennie Sancho, labor representative to the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB)-6, said as of Wednesday, the board is only waiting for the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) to be signed by Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III.

“But in principle, it is already good as approved,” he added.

Wage Order No. 3, providing a salary increase of PHP500 per month for “kasambahay” in Western Visayas, was approved by the RTWPB-6 on March 27.

Under the latest order, domestic workers are entitled to receive a monthly wage of at least PHP4,000.

Sancho pointed out that the new wage order takes effect 15 days after publication, thus the salary increase is expected to start within the month.

He added that the publication normally comes after the affirmation of the NWPC, in this case, dated April 12.

Wage Order No. 2, which lapsed last December 8, prescribed a minimum wage rate of PHP3,500 per month for domestic workers in the region.
