MANILA — Sophisticated cameras will be installed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) this year, an official said on Monday.

“We will acquire sophisticated cameras for counter-terrorism,” Immigration Port Operations Division chief Grifton Medina told the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

Medina said about PHP50-100 million will be spent for the high-tech cameras which would be able to determine the identity of a person even from a long distance.

Emphasizing that there are times when Immigration officers at NAIA have to deal with 10,000 passengers at almost the same time in a day, he said the most advanced gadgets would be of great help to better protect the country’s security.

“This gadget can capture an image in about 0.2 seconds, and has 90 percent accuracy,” Medina noted.

“This (kind of gadget) will be enough to identify a person, even when only his or her eyes are bared,” he added.

Earlier, Sri Lanka banned all kinds of clothing that covers the face and prevents a person’s identification, such as niqab and burqa.

Sri Lanka’s announcement came a week after suicide bombings struck Colombo on April 21.
