MANILA — President Rodrigo Duterte greeted mothers in the Philippines and around the world Happy Mother’s Day as he wished all of them to live a “happy and contented” life.

Duterte’s greeting was posted on the official Facebook page of former Special Assistant to the President (SAP) and senatorial candidate Christopher “Bong” Go early Sunday morning.

“Sa lahat ng mga nanay sa Pilipinas at sa buong mundo na lang (to all mothers in the country and the entire world), happy Mother’s Day at I wish you a very happy and contented life,” Duterte said in his video message.

The President even recalled how his own mother, Soledad, like any mother would do everything for her family.

“I know how is it to be a mother kasi may nanay ako at nakita ko ang hirap at ginhawa na ginawa niya para sa pamilya niya (because I have a mother and I saw how she went through suffering and comfort and would do everything for her family),” Duterte said.

“Pero mabuhay kayong lahat, mga nanay (Long live all mothers)!” he added.

Duterte was known to be close to his late mother, frequently mentioned her in his speeches, and would visit her tomb on All Saints’ Day and other occasions.

Soledad was a teacher in Davao City and also led a movement in Mindanao against former president Ferdinand Marcos in the 1980s.
