Troops pay last respects to late NegOcc army commander

BACOLOD CITY — Officials of the Philippine Army in Panay and Negros led their troops in paying their last respects to the late Brig. Gen. Francisco Delfin, former commander of the 303rd Infantry Brigade in Negros Occidental, on Friday.

Delfin, 56, battled lymphoma and passed away in a hospital in Iloilo City on June 3.

The army officials attended the send-off honors at the Iloilo Airport at about 7 a.m., in the presence of Delfin’s wife Marites and other family members.

His remains were flown to the Philippine Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Metro Manila on board a C-130 aircraft of the Philippine Air Force.

Those who paid their final respects were Major Gen. Dinoh Dolina and Brig. Gen. Eric Vinoya, commander and assistant commander, respectively, of the 3rd Infantry Division (ID) based in Jamindan, Capiz.

They were joined by Brig. Gen. Alberto Desoyo, commander of the 301st Infantry Brigade (IB) in Iloilo; Brig. Gen. Ignacio Madriaga, commander of 302IB in Negros Oriental; and Brig. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, commander of 303IB.

Delfin, who retired from military service in February, was the assistant division commander of 3ID from 2017 to 2018, and commanding officer of 303IB based in Murcia town between 2015 and 2017.

A member of the Philippine Military Academy Class 1985, Delfin, who hailed from Capiz, obtained a degree in Master of Science in Defense and Strategic Studies from the University of Madras in India.

He was also assigned as commander of the 1IB in Luzon, and received several medals, including the Distinguished Service Star.

Delfin’s interment will be held at the Libingan ng mga Bayani on June 11.
