Heavy rains wash out NCAA seniors games

MANILA — Torrential rains brought about by the southwest monsoon forced the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to call off its scheduled afternoon games, including all three seniors division matches, at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

“Due to the late suspension of classes, the games scheduled at 12 p.m. onwards for Friday, 2 August 2019, are CANCELED and shall be played on a date and time to be determined later,” NCAA management committee chairman, Peter Cayco, said in a statement.

The announcement came moments after Mayor Francis Zamora declared the suspension of classes in all levels due to the inclement weather.

San Beda was scheduled to battle the College of St. Benilde in the first seniors game at noontime. San Sebastian was supposed to battle Perpetual Help in the second seniors game at 2 p.m., and host school Arellano was to face Lyceum in the third game at 4 p.m. – with their juniors counterparts seeing action in the nightcap at 6 p.m.

“Tickets for canceled games today shall be honored on the re-scheduled date,” Cayco added.

However, due to the late announcement, the juniors games in the morning, with La Salle Greenhills taking on San Beda-Taytay and San Sebastian battling Perpetual Help, pushed through.

The Greenies stunned the Red Cubs in overtime, 99-98, behind a 30-point explosion from Gilas Pilipinas Youth standout RC Calimag.

The other juniors game between the Staglets and the Altalettes was ongoing as of posting.
