Marikina City has learned its lesson well from Typhoon Ondoy in 2009 when torrential rains hit the country and swelled up Marikina River, leaving residential areas submerged for days. To prevent this from happening again, the local government allocates PhP800M annually for the rehabilitation of Marikina River with projects like dredging to deepen its riverbed, and creating awareness campaigns for residents near the waterway.
