LRT-2 may be fully operational by June

The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) is optimistic the LRT-2 line turns fully operational by June, almost eight months since the implementation of its partial operations due to the fire that hit its rectifiers early October last year.

“We’re confident that by June, or even prior to June, we can complete the repairs and that the provisional operations will be implemented,” LRTS Spokesperson Hernando Cabrera said.

The LRTA said it has speeded up the procurement process so they can start repair work and have the three affected stations operational in Santolan, Katipunan, and Anonas.

The LRTA initially said they will only replace the non-functioning rectifiers but has noticed the need to hire full-time technical consultants given the lack of manpower for repairs and for the new system implementation.

Bidding has been completed and repair work is set to begin and expected to finish in two to three months.

Although restoration is expected to take place by June, operations might take a bit longer before things get back to normal.

“This means that trains may be a bit slower, or cannot run for too long at any given time, but [we] will at least restore the stations,” Cabrera said. – Report from Mica Joson
