PLDT and Smart Comm Spox: Messages received in Pag-asa Island, merely ‘Welcome’ greetings

PLDT and Smart Communications clarified that the roaming messages received by government officials and reporters in Pag-asa Island were merely greetings.

The messages that said “Welcome to Vietnam” and “Welcome to China” were from their roaming partner mobile operators in Vietnam and China.

“Mayroong signal po ‘yung mga operators doon in that area of the West Philippine Sea, particularly in that area around Pag-asa Island. Kaya na-pick up po nila ‘yung signal at nakatanggap po sila ng roaming welcome message. (The operators have a signal in that area of the West Philippine Sea, particularly around Pag-asa Island. The signals were picked up and they received the roaming welcome message.)”

PLDT and Smart Communications Spokesperson Ramon Isberto initially stated that their cell site in the island is not operational since it had a problem even before the declaration of the Enhanced Community Quarantine. Their people have been sent to fix the site and are expected to finish this week.

Meanwhile, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana shared that the government aims to establish a strong cell site in the island.
