LRT-2 installs new elevators, escalators

MANILA — The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) has activated 32 new elevators and 13 escalators in various LRT-Line 2 stations to ensure comfort and convenience of its passengers.

The project is in line with the objective of the Duterte administration to provide the riding public especially senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and pregnant women, a safer and more accessible commuting experience.

“This is a gift of the Duterte administration to the LRT passengers so that they will be more comfortable in their commutes,” LRTA Administrator Gen. Reynaldo Berroya said during its launch Thursday.

Berroya expressed gratitude to Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade for the rehabilitation program of the LRTA.

The activation of new elevators and escalators is part of the newly-installed, state-of-the-art and durable conveyance system of the LRTA, which is designed to last from 10 to 15 years.

This is the first time that the LRT-2’s conveyance system was replaced since the railway started its operations in 2003.

The rehabilitation projects of LRT-2 will also include the systematic replacement of all train air-conditioning systems, restoration of four trains and rehabilitation of station facilities and equipment.

The LRT-2 runs from Santolan in Pasig to Recto in Manila and has an average ridership of more than 250,000 passengers daily. (ABP/PNA)
