DFA continues repatriation of Filipinos

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is continuously exerting efforts in repatriating Filipinos affected by the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in other countries.

According to DFA Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr., the department does not stop in thinking of ways to repatriate Fiipinos despite the travel restrictions imposed by other countries. As of June 29, around 60,000 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) have been transported back to the Philippines.

However, the government’s ability to repatriate has been limited due to the COVID-19 crisis and the lack of facilities in the country. The DFA also admits that its fund for the OFW repatriation is almost depleted. Sec. Locsin has been tasked to realign the budget of the agency to sustain the funds.

The DFA has also ensured that the arrival of the bodies of Filpinos who died in Saudi Arabia will push through. Together with other government agencies, they have until July 4 as deadline. However, there are a few discussions to extend the deadline and prepare for the requirements.
