New EAMC COVID-19 facility to open Monday

The separate hospital with a 250-bed capacity dedicated for COVID-19 at the East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) will be opened on Monday.

The facility aims to expand COVID-19 services and to separate non-COVID-19 patients from coronavirus-infected patients of the hospital.

The EAMC has been receiving 900 to 1,000 in-patients daily before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This has now increased to more than 2,000 that can be handled by a 500-bed capacity, far from the 350-bed capacity the EAMC currently has.

As of August 10, 112 of the admitted patients at EAMC are suspected cases of COVID-19, 22 are probable, 17 are mild, 18 are severe, and 19 are critical.

“When we opened up a little bit to MECQ, we reached 20 to 30 cases na po per week. But again, when we opened up [to GCQ], we are now reaching 50 to 60 cases per week,” EAMC COVID-19 Task Force Head Dr. Dennis Ordoῆa disclosed.

One-third of the cases are healthcare workers. The EAMC said many of its health workers want to immediately return to service once they recover from COVID-19. – Report from Karen Villanda
