DTI recommends merchant listing to avoid scam

Among the 12,000 online complaints received by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), more than 1,300 are about fake or unregistered products.

Several members of the Senate Committee on Trade, Commerce and Entrepreneurship wish to penalize the inadequate security measures of online platforms on their products. Lazada Philippines has admitted that fake products escape scrutiny with so many products to go through. “Small sellers” may be prohibited to protect the online platform.

The DTI is not in favor of the suggestion.

“There are small players that are legitimate and that, who follow code of conduct. Baka ang dapat gawin ng mga platforms ay tanggalin nila ‘yung mga unscrupulous sellers. (Maybe they should remove the unscrupulous sellers instead)” DTI Undersecretary Ruth Castelo pointed out.

The department added that the choices may narrow down for consumers once the small sellers are prohibited.

The DTI recommended the e-commerce websites to provide a list of their merchants. This will help reveal the identification of unscrupulous sellers.
