DepEd to implement ‘No Periodical Exam’ policy for SY 2020-2021

The Department of Education (DepEd) will implement a “no periodical exam” policy for the school year 2020 to 2021 in public schools to prevent “distance cheating”.

According to the department, there is a possibility that parents or guardians of the students will answer the tests now that they are at home. Other activities that are more effective compared to pen and paper examinations may be used.

“This summative and performance tasks could be delivered in various ways though we acknowledge the importance of periodic tests as a gauge of students’ learnings the current condition needs us to be more creative and flexible in implementing summative assessment scheme,” DepEd Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio pointed out.

The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition sees it as a welcome development because the coalition believes that the education sector needs to adapt especially in time of crisis.

Meanwhile, the Education department is preparing the interim guidelines regarding the assessment on students. It is expected to be issued in the next few days.

The agency is asking parents to let their children answer learning modules or activities given them even if there is no periodical exam since it is the way for the children to learn.
