SBMA Chairman and Administrator Wilma T. Eisma on the SFEX Accident

We regret to inform everyone that an accident happened at past noon today, October 13, at the bridge construction site along the Subic Freeport Expressway (SFEX), which is undergoing expansion by NLEX Corp., the operator of said expressway.

Photos taken by the SBMA media team showed that a steel framework, which is part of the superstructure of the bridge under construction, fell off a column. Initial information indicated that two workers at the point where the steel framework hit the ground were pinned underneath and are feared to be dead.

Retrieval operations jointly undertaken by NLEX EMT and SBMA Fire Department are ongoing.

We are awaiting details from NLEX Corporation, police investigators and other authorities to shed light on this tragic event.

We hope that a thorough investigation would uncover the cause and prevent a similar disaster from happening again.
