NPC bans use of client contact for ‘shame campaign’

The National Privacy Commission (NPC) will ban on November the use of borrowers’ contact information by online lenders to make clients pay through shame campaign.

The privacy commission made the announcement following the series of complaints against online and app-based lenders using phone and social media contact information to harass borrowers with pending dues.

Despite faster processing of loans through the said application, the NPC said in its circular that “complaints claimed that these lending entities, through the online apps, processed personal data of their clients without (legal) basis, and used such personal data about their clients and other individuals in their contact list causing damage to their reputation.”

The directive is embodied in NPC Circular 20-01 that is expected to be effective starting middle of November. – PTV News
