Cordillera Region braces for TY Siony, price of vegetables up

The price of highland vegetables at the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post such as broccoli, lettuce, radish, celery, bell pepper, garden peas, and Benguet beans has increased this week due to low supply and unstable demand.

The price of cabbage, wombok, carrots, and sayote which has been down since the COVID-19 pandemic began also slightly went up.

“Pero doon sa mga dahon, mga repolyo at iba pa pong klase ng leaves ay medyo nagmahal na ngayon kasi planting season ngayon. Hinahabol nila ito para sa Christmas po (but the price of leafy vegetables slightly rose because it is currently planting season. They are preparing for Christmas),” LTVTP Admin. Wilson Revilar explained.

Farmers have welcomed the adjustment of prices and are expecting it to stay this way until Christmas.

However, the price of potatoes dropped amid high supply.

“Iyong patatas natin, akala kasi ng mga farmers natin ay tatama iyong bagyo rito sa atin kaya nag-harvest na sila, hinabol nila bago tumama iyong bagyong Rolly kaya dumami ang stock ng patatas (Our farmers thought the typhoon would hit us so they harvested before Typhoon Rolly’s landfall. That is why our stock for potatoes increased),” Revilar explained.

Farmers in Benguet are hoping that tropical storm Siony will not leave heavy damages as some of their crops were already destroyed by previous typhoons.

Whie no heavy damage and casualty were recorded in the recent typhoon, the Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Counci (RDRRMC) assured that it is prepared for the possible impact of the tropical storm Siony.

Department of Socia Welfare and Development (DSWD) CAR Regional Director Leo Quintilla disclosed that more than 14,000 food packs for the region, more than 52,000 hygiene kits, and more than Php 3 million reserve funds have been prepared.

Small scale miners in the region have been advised to be vigilant as tropical storm Siony is expected to hit Northern Luzon later this week. – Report from Breves Bulsao/PTV Cordillera
