Statement of CHR Spokesperson, Atty Jacqueline Ann de Guia, on Rep. Cullamat’s request seeking CHR’s investigation on the case of her slain daughter

Yesterday, 01 December 2020, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) formally received the complaint letter of Rep. Eufemia Cullamat requesting investigation on the case of her daughter Jevilyn who was killed in a military operation in Surigao del Sur.

The Commission, through CHR Chairperson Chito Gascon, welcomed the representatives from the Makabayan bloc who personally filed the complaint at the CHR office, and had a dialogue regarding the rampant cases of red-tagging and various human rights violations against members of progressive organisations.

The CHR Caraga Regional Office has already launched a probe on the case of Cullamat. We promise to work closely with the family of the victim and the authorities to shed light on the incident.

We also note the recent request for investigation of the family of former National Democratic Front of the Philippines consultants Eugenia Magpantay and Agaton Topacio who were recently killed in a police encounter in Angono, Rizal.

Faithful to its mandate, the CHR is always open to any party who seeks aid in pursuing justice and accountability for human rights violations perpetrated by both state and non-state actors.
