UK launches COVID-19 vaccination

Thousands of Britons stand to benefit from free shots as the United Kingdom launches its V-Day or Vaccination Day against the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

Health staff and other frontliners as well as elders, were given priority on the first day including 90 year-old Margaret Keenan who was the first to be inoculated with the Pfizer BioNtech vaccine. Incidentally, the injection has been administered by a Filipina nurse.

Keenan considers this as an early birthday present as she would be turning 91 next week.

“I’d say go for it. Go for it because it’s free, and it’s the best thing that’s ever happened at the moment. So do go for it, that’s what I say. If I can do it, so can you,” Keenan encouraged.

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock says that V-Day is a testimonial to the scientific experts’ painstaking efforts at fighting the deadly virus.

“A tribute to scientific endeavour and human ingenuity and to the hard work of so many people. Today marks the start of the fightback against our common enemy, the coronavirus,” Sec. Hancock acknowledged.

The UK aims to dispense 800,000 doses in the coming days and 4 million before the month ends. – Report from Voice of America, Stephanie Sevillano
