DFA assures Kafala System reforms in Saudi Arabia

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) assured that the first part of junking the Kafala System in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) will be carried out on March 14.

Under the Kafala or the sponsorship system, employers have control over every movement of their employees. This is one of the systems the DFA wishes to change as this is open to abuse.

The DFA is set to visit KSA in the first quarter of 2021 to propose the inclusion of household service workers among the beneficiaries of the junking of the Kafala System.

The reform of the sponsorship system started in Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Oman is also scheduled to introduce the changes in 2021. An estimate of 20 million Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are to benefit from the said proposal. – Report from Naomi Tiburcio
