DILG: Amending economic provisions of constitution timely

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said it is timely to advance amendments to the provisions of the 1987 Constitution that concern the economy.

DILG Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya explained that the economy will be able to recover further from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic if the restrictive economic provisions will be removed.

“Makakatulong sa recovery ng ating bansa kung mas lalago ang foreign direct investment sa ating bansa (It will help our economic recovery if foreign direct investment will flourish more in our country),” Malaya stated.

“Ang gusto po sana namin ay instead na sila ang pupunta abroad, dito na lang pumunta ang mga dayuhang mamumuhunan at dito na lang maghanap ng trabaho ang ating mga kababayan (What we want is for foreign investors to come here instead of going abroad and for our countrymen to find jobs here), Malaya added.

Malaya assured that there is still time for small amendments in certain sections of the Article 12 and other provisions of the Constitution. He concluded that there are no political amendments because the “resolution right now is just focused on economic amendments.” – Report from Kenneth Paciente
