Students reach 1st quarter performance goal

The Department of Education (DepEd) gladly announced that students have reached the performance goal for quarter 1 of the current school year.

Based on its data from over 21 million enrollees, 99.37% of the students have completed their activity sheets while only 0.63% or over 130,000 learners have not finished the activity sheets.

However, the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition insisted that the high turn-out in activity sheets does not mean that the students have learned much.

“Kasi ang sinusukat ay ‘yung learnings supposedly. Ang sinusukat na achievement ng bata ay ‘yung learnings, ‘yung learning competencies, kung natuto ba talaga siya. Hindi lamang yung participation. Nag-participate nga, hindi naman natuto, wala rin (Because what is measured is the learnings supposedly. The achievement of the students is measured through their learnings, the learning competencies, if he/she really learned, not only the participation. If he/she may participated but did not learn anything then it amounts to nothing),” TDC Chairperson Benjo Basa asserted.

The DepEd responded that the submitted activities are merely basis for the grade of the students. At the start of second quarter, the monitoring of the self-learning module quality will be improved. There will also be coordination with the private sector and publishers in producing the modules for the third and fourth quarter.
