MHD tags 259 Manila barangays as COVID-19 free from December to January

No new COVID-19 cases were reported in 259 barangays in the City of Manila from December 2020 to January 2021, the Manila Health Department (MHD) said.

Manila City Mayor Francisco ‘Isko Moreno’ Domagoso said a P100,000 cash incentive will be awarded to these barangays in line with the city’s second incentive-based program against the COVID-19 pandemic.

But Domagoso said the local government will award P200,000 cash incentives to 32 barangays where no new COVID-19 cases were reported from both September 2020 to October 2020 and December 2020 to January 2021.

To recall, the Mayor launched the city’s first incentive-based program against the pandemic in September 2020, which ended with no new COVID-19 cases detected in 73 barangays.

Out of those 73 barangays, only 32 barangays were able to remain COVID-19 free for the given period of time.

“Nagpapasalamat tayo kasi malaking bagay yung pakikipagtulungan ng barangay at kaya naman pala, so it’s doable. When it is doable, it’s duplicable and I hope the other barangays will continue to do the same,” Domagoso said.

The Mayor said the cash incentive program is only one of many approaches of the city government to contain and mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

About 49 barangays were tallied in District 1, 48 barangays in District 2, 32 barangays in District 3, 61 barangays in District 4, 36 barangays in District 5, and 33 barangays in District 6.

Domagoso assured that policies are continuously being implemented strictly in the nation’s capital despite the increase of barangays with no new infection.

“I am happy, but be that as it may, yung Maynila while inoopen namin ng inoopen yung mga bagay-bagay, we are still conservative in our policy, in our action. Mahigpit pa rin kami. May mga challenges, but these are part of what you call risk management,” Domagoso.
