President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday accepted five new ambassadors from the European Union (EU), France, Brazil, South Korea, and Colombia.
As the President received their credentials, assurances were made for strengthened cooperation in the battle against COVID-19, defense modernization, trade and industry, and infrastructure, among others.
EU Ambassador Luc Véron said the EU “is eager to pursue the effective implementation of its partnership and cooperation agreement with the Philippines in all areas”.
“The EU continues its participation in supporting peace and development in Bangsamoro through a comprehensive and inclusive approach. The recent signing of several financing agreements worth 4.7 billion pesos will enable us to continue our unwavering support to the peace process that has been a cornerstone of your presidency,” Véron added.
“The Philippines and the EU share a deep respect for democracy and the rule of law… We wish to partner with the EU to protect and promote the rights of all,” President Duterte responded.
Antonio José Maria De Souza E Silva of Brazil also assured that he and his team in the country will work on the strengthening of mutual relations.
“Let us work together to intensify bilateral trade and investment exchanges during your tenure, especially in agriculture, biofuels, Business Process Outsourcing and logistics,” Pres. Duterte replied.
He encouraged cooperation in ensuring universal access to vaccines against COVID-19, inclusive growth, sustainable development, and bilateral consultations.
Ambassador-Designate of Korea to the Philippines Kim In-Chul shared they have been trying their best to work with and for the Filipino people, citing the Puerto Princesa Airport renovation and the ongoing 3.7-kilometer Panguil Bay Bridge construction.
“Let us sustain the momentum of our robust cooperation in trade and investment, sustainable development, infrastructure and [integration], and defense. We value your country’s exceptional commitment to the Philippines’ Build, Build, Build program,” the Philippine Chief Executive stated.
French Ambassador Michèle Boccoz ensured commitment in keeping the improvement on “growing cooperation” regarding defense and strategic matters. She added that “investments in key sectors” of the Philippine economy is also a priority.
“We are interested in further expanding ties, particularly in defense, trade and investments, public health and tourism. We also look forward to enhanced cooperation on climate change and sustainable development, environmental protection, migration and migrant workers’ rights, gender justice, and combatting transnational crimes, including cybersecurity and counterterrorism,” Pres. Duterte expressed.
Colombian Ambassador Marcela Ordoñez brought up the cooperation in investment, tourism, and improvement in the trading of goods, saying that they are also interested “in selling pork meat and beef to the Philippines”.
“Together, in solidarity and cooperation, we will continue to build upon the gains of our longstanding friendship,” the president answered. – Report from Mela Lesmoras
