MMC opposes opening of cinemas

The Metro Manila Council (MMC) wishes to delay the opening of the cinemas following the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID)’s pronouncement.

According to MMC Chairperson and Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez, the opening of cinemas may add more Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases especially that the NCR is still under General Community Quarantine and COVID-19 UK Variant cases have been reported.

Mayor Olivares is apprehensive since “ang cinema is enclosed po siya, at magtitigil ang tao po roon ng 2 to 3 hours. ‘Yun pong ventilation questionable po ‘yan kasi very enclosed po ang cinema po natin at alam naman po natin hindi pa natin nako-contain itong virus (the cinema is an enclosed [venue]. The people will stay there for 2 to 3 hours. The ventilation there is questionable because it is enclosed and we all know that we have not yet contained the virus).”

Mayor Olivarez then clarified that the MMC is not opposing the opening of the economy, rather it is only thinking of what is best for the current situation of the region. Report from Patrick De Jesus
