DepEd extends current school year until July 10

The Department of Education (DepEd) has extended school year 2020-2021 until July 10 for public schools. y

Under Department Order No. 012, the DepEd claimed that the learning gaps of students must be filled up to ensure that they are acquiring essential learning competencies. Learning gaps are caused by reduced academic opportunities due to distance learning and lack of face-to-face classes.

Given the adjustment, the interventions and remediation activities based on the need of the learners and results of the past 2 quarters are being conducted from March 1 to 12.

According to DepEd Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio, he will take back the idea of a shortened vacation for the students.

“I-wi-withdraw ko na iyong idea na ganoon lang kaiksi kasi ang nabanggit ko noon ay 2 weeks. Hindi na talaga ganoon, so mahaba naman para magkaroon ng sapat na panahon ang bawat isa na maghanda sa susunod na pasukan. (I will withdraw the idea of a shortened vacation because I said last time that it would only be 2 weeks. It will not be like that, so there will be enough time for each other to prepare for the next school opening).”

In relation with this, the education department assured that the teachers will be paid properly for the days they will report to work. It is also encouraging private schools, local universities and colleges, and other institution to implement the said adjustment. – Report from Kenneth Paciente
