2 die, 3 hurt in Batangas resort landslide

SAN JUAN, Batangas – Two vacationers died while three others were injured when a large boulder broke off from a landslide and crushed the vacationing family at the Kota Keluarga Resort in Barangay Laiya-Ibabao here at around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

San Juan police investigators said the two victims were identified as 48 year-old Ma. Luisa Mayrena Santos from Sta. Rosa City, Laguna and her 17 year-old nephew, Christopher Lloyd Cruz from Mandaluyong City.

The injured were identified as Emel Luis Mayrena Santos, Baltazar Santos, and Ma. Luisa Mayrena Santos.

Investigation disclosed that the vacationers were staying at a 20-foot shipping container van that was customized into a temporary guest room when the huge boulder fell on it.

The injured victims were retrieved from the crushed container van and brought to the San Juan District Hospital.

The remains of Ma. Luisa and Christopher Lloyd, who were trapped inside the improvised room, were retrieved at 9 a.m. on Wednesday and brought to the Redondo Funeral Homes, Poblacion in San Juan, Batangas.

Local emergency responders and rescuers said intermittent heavy rains since Tuesday evening caused by Tropical Depression “Ramil” may have loosened the soil and triggered the landslide a few meters from the resort. (PNA)
