OCTA: COVID-19 ‘ripple effect’ may occur in Visayas, Mindanao

The OCTA Research group warned on Sunday (May 30) of a possible increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Visayas and Mindanao as an effect of the COVID-19 surge in Metro Manila in March.

In an interview with GMA, OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David said “historical records” show that a COVID-19 surge in the National Capital Region (NCR ) is usually followed by a spike in cases in various areas after one or two months.

“May cycle nga ‘yan, parang nagkakaroon ng ripple effect, nagpupunta sa probinsya pero eventually, baka bumalik rin na naman sa NCR.”

He emphasized that the cycle can only be broken by vaccination.

The Department of Health has said it will further strengthen the vaccination drive once additional vaccine supplies arrive in June.
