Taguig City among those with lowest COVID-19 case fatality rate

Taguig City remains among the areas with the lowest COVID-19 case fatality rates (CFR) in the Philippines, the independent research group OCTA said.

The city’s 0.72%  CFR recorded from June 17 to 23 is much lower than the 1.5% recorded by the National Capital Region, according to OCTA’s June 24 report. The group comprises researchers primarily from the University of the Philippines and contributors from the University of Sto. Tomas and Providence College in the United States.

A low CFR is an indicator of a local government unit’s (LGU) capacity to save the lives of those infected with COVID-19.

According to the OCTA team, Taguig also has one of the lowest deaths per million rates in Metro Manila, at 293 deaths per million people.

Hospital bed utilization, ICU utilization, and mechanical ventilator occupancy in Taguig hospitals remain at the safe level, below 60%.

In particular, as of May 13, Department of Health data showed COVID ICU and COVID bed occupancy at 42% each, while ventilator occupancy was at 59%.

Mayor Lino Cayetano welcomed the group’s findings. OCTA has been monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic in the country since it started.

Mayor Lino attributed the results to the city’s hardworking healthcare workers, who have tirelessly performed their duties even amid the dangers of contracting the virus.

The mayor also thanked the hardworking medical frontliners who continue to work round-the-clock to take care of their patients and to ensure that more Taguigeños receive their vaccine doses at the soonest possible time.

Taguig has been very aggressive in its campaign against COVID-19 from the start, with the national government and the World Health Organization recognizing the city’s innovative and proactive approach.

The city has set up at least 12 vaccination sites to reach as many people as possible for inoculation.

These vaccination sites include those situated at:

  • SM Aura
  • Lakeshore area
  • Vista Mall Parking Building
  • Bonifacio High Street
  • Venice Grand Canal Mall
  • Lakeshore Trade Center
  • RP Cruz Elementary School
  • EM’s Signal Village Elementary School
  • Western Bicutan National High School
  • St. Luke’s Medical Center
  • Medical Center Taguig
  • Sea Breeze Resort

These sites are apart from the vaccination buses set up by the local government to get to Taguigeños in every barangay. Recently, the city extended the vaccination hours to 10:00 p.m. at its Bonifacio High Street hub.

Mayor Lino believes that the city is going in the right direction, but reminded everyone not to be complacent. His advice was to remain vigilant and follow the city’s health protocols. (Taguig LGU) – jlo
