DILG warns politicians vs. political meetings amid COVID-19 pandemic

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) warned politicians against organizing meetings that can be considered mass gatherings amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a Laging Handa public briefing on Tuesday (July 20), DILG Undersecretary Epimaco Densing III sent out the warning following reports of some officials who are beginning to call political meetings and assemblies.

“I do understand na mayroon kaming nari-receive na reports na nagma-mass gathering o nagsisimula na po iyong mga pa-meeting ng mga pulitiko. Sana po iyong ating mga pulitiko magdalawang-isip muna, at huwag muna ituloy itong mga pa-meeting nila dahil mass gathering din po ito,” he said.

Densing reminded the officials that the meetings can become superspreader events, especially in areas with a high number of COVID-19 cases.

He said the department will be stricter when it comes to mass gatherings to prevent the further spread of the disease following reports of local cases of the Delta variant in the country.
