Malacañang assures gov’t fight vs. terrorism amid COVID-19 pandemic

Malacañang assured the continuous strengthening of the government’s fight against terrorism amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the International Humanitarian Law Day, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on Thursday (Aug. 12) pointed out the incessant chaos caused by the communist and extremist groups in the country that worsens the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic to the country.

He emphasized that as part of the government’s obligation, the authorities are doubling their efforts against terrorism.

“It is unfortunate that our on-going efforts to confront an unseen nemesis called COVID-19 are greatly encumbered by its seen counterpart called local terrorism. But our obligation as government to protect our people at all times, which IHL constantly reminds us of, inspires us to be strong and focused in bringing about healing and recovery in these difficult times,” he said.

In relation to this, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar assured the improved efforts to “prevent attacks by local terror groups.”

“We have been intensifying our presence in communities to deter these hostile groups from causing trouble.

Eleazar said that the PNP remains alert for terrorist attacks amid the pandemic faced by the Philippines.
