PNP: 100 cops have died of COVID-19

A 44-year old policeman from Ilocos Region died on Sunday (Aug. 22) due to medical complications from COVID-19, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Police Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said.

Citing reports from the PNP Health Service (PNPHS), he added that the fatality is a 44-year-old police staff sergeant assigned to Police Regional Office 1. His death raises the number of total fatalities among the PNP’s ranks to 100.

Although fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the patient was immuno-compromised with high comorbidity. Per his relative, the police officer was undergoing dialysis due to chronic kidney disease.

“He was also on work-from-home status since the start of the pandemic. However, on August 19, he was rushed to a hospital due to difficulty of breathing and was tested positive [for] the said virus, and on August 22 he succumbed,” Eleazar said.

As of Aug. 23, the PNPHS has recorded 116 recoveries among the infected personnel, bringing the total recoveries to 31,492, while 150 new cases were noted, bringing the total cases to 33,438 with 1,846 active cases.

The PNP has 88,940 or 40.03% fully vaccinated police personnel, while 103,623 or 46.64% have received their first dose. This leaves only 29,606 or 13.33% police personnel unvaccinated. (PNP-PIO) – jlo
