188 heath frontliners in Cebu City tested positive for COVID-19

COVID-19 infection among healthcare workers has been affecting Cebu City’s COVID-19 response, an official said on Monday (Aug. 23).

Cebu City Emergency Operation Center Head and Councilor Joel Garganera confirmed that 188  health frontliners contracted COVID-19 in Cebu City, as of the latest data on Monday.

“188 sa ating record, hindi pa sila makapag-trabaho dahil naka-isolate sila. Kakaunti lamang ang ating mga health workers, nabawasan pa,” Garganera told PTV.

The average fresh daily COVID-19 cases are about 300, with more than 70% of the cases being symptomatic.

“Sa 120 na new cases natin, 73% ang symptomatic at 27% lang ang asymptomatic,” Garganera said.

The local government suspects that the slow vaccination rate causes the surge of COVID-19 cases in Cebu City.

“Ang ating na-fully immunized lang is only 24.6%, at sa first dose ay umabot iyan sa 36%,” Garganera added.

As of Aug. 22, there are 16,898 active COVID-19 cases in Western Visayas, with Cebu City topping the list of highly-urbanized cities with the most number of active cases in the region. – Report from John Aroa / CF -rir
