House OKs bill against nuisance candidates

The House of Representatives on Tuesday (Aug. 24) approved on the third and final reading the bill that will impose penalties against nuisance candidates.

With 191 votes in favor of the House Bill 9557 or An Act Providing An Efficient Procedure For Declaring A Nuisance Candidate, the lawmakers agreed to impose a fine of ₱100,000 on individuals who will mock the election process through filing of a certificate of candidacy.

Once turned into law, the HB 9557 tasks the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to implement the penalties. The bill aims to penalize individuals who intend to cause confusion or mockery such as using the same name of a known candidate or do not have the means to run in the elections.
