The second batch of repatriated overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Afghanistan arrived at the Clark International Airport on Tuesday (Aug. 24), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed.
In a bulletin, the DFA said one more Filipino was able to flee to the United Kingdom, while about 26 OFWs were still left in the troubled nation.
“Some of those who have already been evacuated will be arriving today (Aug. 24) and tomorrow (Aug. 25) – 22 from the UK, 9 from Singapore, and 5 more from Doha,” the bulletin stated.
A total of 183 Filipinos have fled Afghanistan after the Taliban installed themselves in the presidential palace. The first batch of repatriation of 35 OFWs happened on Aug. 17.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said financial assistance worth P10,000 will be given to OFWs under the Department of Labor Employment’s Abot Kamay ang Pagtulong (DOLE-AKAP) program. – Report from Karen Villanda / CF – bny
