No injuries reported after grandstand collapses in Dutch stadium

Xinhua News Agency

THE HAGUE – No injuries were reported after the lower part of a grandstand collapsed on Sunday (Oct. 17) in a football stadium in Nijmegen, a city in the east-central Netherlands.

The incident occurred in the Goffert Stadium as fans from Vitesse Arnhem celebrated the only goal in their side’s win over home team NEC Nijmegen.

A video clip posted on social media showed the stand buckling under the weight of the celebrating fans. The upper rows appeared to remain intact and the grandstand was evacuated after the incident.

NEC Nijmegen director Wilco van Schaik told Dutch television that initial reports showed no one was injured.

A container situated under that section of the stand helped prevent any further collapse, he added.

Nijmegen Mayor Hubert Bruls has ordered an investigation into the incident as soon as possible. (Xinhua) – bny
