Twin earthquakes hit Surigao del Sur

Earthquakes jolted the municipalities of Hinatuan and Lingig in Surigao del Sur on Sunday (Oct. 24) morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The first earthquake struck around 7:08 a.m. 75 kilometers (km) off the coast of Lingig with a magnitude of 5.3 and depth of 19 km.

The second tremor hit 7:13 a.m. 85 km east off the coast of Hinatuan town with a magnitude of 3.4 and depth of 23 km.

Both were tectonic in origin. No intensities were recorded in inhabited areas of both towns.

Aftershocks are expected in Lingig, the agency said. No damage was reported as of posting time. (PNA) – jlo
