DTI cautions public on buying low-quality Christmas lights

With Christmas fast approaching, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) advises the public to be more cautious when it comes to buying Christmas lights.

Reports from Christmas lights crafters have come in regarding some products exploding and catching fire because of the low quality.

According to DTI, some signs can help determine whether or not Christmas lights and other electronic products have passed a quality test.

If the item is imported, consumers should first look for the Import Commodity Clearance or ICC sticker that contains a holographic QR code.

If locally made or if from a foreign manufacturer, buyers would best check if it has a Product Safety or PS mark. This is a circle and has a check symbol on the side.

“Iyong mga Christmas lights na bibilin ngayong Pasko, mainam ay may ICC or PS mark para sigurado po tayo na [safe] ang pamilya,” DTI Assistant Secretary Jean Pacheco said last Oct. 15.

“Kapag may PS mark o ICC sticker and isang produkto, ibig sabihin po nagdaan po ito ng certification process ng inyo pong Bureau of Philippine Standard at ito po ay nagko-conform sa Philippine national standard,” Pacheco said. – Report from Cleizl Pardilla/PG – bny
