Troops arrest Abu Sayyaf man

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Joint elements of the police and military have arrested an alleged member of the Abu Sayyaf Group in a law enforcement operation in the province of Basilan, an official said Thursday.

Supt. Restituto Pangusban, Isabela City police chief, identified the arrested bandit as Ustadz Warid Said alias Ibno Ayob, an alleged member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).

Pangusban said Said was arrested in a law enforcement operation by way of serving warrant of arrest around 12:05 a.m. Thursday in Barangay Kumalarang, Isabela City, the capital of Basilan province.

Pangusban said the suspect has standing warrant of arrest for the crime of kidnapping and serious illegal detention with no recommended bail issued by a court in Isabela City.

He said kidnapping and serious illegal detention is penalize under Article 247 of the Revise Penal code of the Philippines as amended by Section 8 of Republic Act No. 7659.

The Abu Sayyaf Group was formed in early 1990s and is the most violent although the smallest group of lawless elements in the country. (PNA)
