Baguio eyes increasing allowed tourists in the city

The local government of Baguio City is studying whether to further increase the number of tourists allowed to enter the city as the Omicron variant remains undetected in the country.

The city increased the number of leisure travelers to 4,000 last week. Tourists directly heading to hotels and accommodation with their own triage are not included in the count.

“We found out na when we increased it to 4,000, manageable naman ang ating triage facility,” Mayor Benjamin Magalong said.

“We’re okay, and we’re thinking of – we’ll be having a meeting today para ma-determine natin if it would be appropriate for us to increase it by another 1,000,” he added.

The local government remains hopeful that COVID-19 cases remain low this holiday season until the new year.

Based on the latest monitoring of the city’s Health Services Office, the city only has a daily average case count of eight without any COVID-19 related deaths.

“We can never be complacent kaya tuloy-tuloy pa rin ang aming – itong multisource surveillance namin, and at the same time preparing for the arrival of Omicron,” Magalong said.

Meanwhile, the city is prepared for the second round of three-day Bayanihan Bakunahan event starting Wednesday (Dec. 15), where it aims to inoculate over 4,700 individuals a day. – Report from Jorton Campana (PTV Cordillera)/AG-rir
