By Ma. Cristina Arayata | Philippine News Agency

MANILA – A magnitude 6 earthquake jolted Cagayan early Friday, July 1, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The tectonic quake struck 27 kilometers southeast of Dalupiri Island at 2:40 a.m. It was 27 kilometers deep.

Intensity 5 was felt in Aparri and Calayan, Cagayan; Flora, Apayao; while Intensity 4 was felt in Penablanca and Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

Intensity 3 was reported in Vigan City and Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

Phivolcs recorded the following instrumental Intensities:

  • Intensity 5 – Claveria, Cagayan
  • Intensity 4 – Laoag City and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; Gonzaga and Penablanca, Cagayan
  • Intensity 3 – Vigan City and Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Ilagan, Isabela
  • Intensity 2 – Tabuk, Kalinga
  • Intensity 1 – Baler, Aurora; Santiago City, Isabela; Dagupan City, Pangasinan

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake. Instrumental intensity, on the other hand, is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Damage is unlikely since damage starts at Intensity 6 based on Phivolcs’ scale. Aftershocks, however, are expected. (PNA)
