LRT-1 operator refrains passengers from forcibly opening train doors

MANILA — The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) will strictly implement the “no forcible opening of doors” policy on the station platforms of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) following an incident where a train door failed to close while running from Vito Cruz to Quirino stations Monday night.

Passengers must avoid forcibly opening train doors to prevent any future mishaps, the LRT-1 operator said.

“Forcibly opening doors is causing train failures, both in LRT-1 and Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3). This may lead to door mechanism failures, which is the top-3 cause of train failure and unloading incidents,” the LRMC said in a statement Wednesday.

The management has instructed the security guards to strictly implement the policy at the LRT stations to avoid the occurrence of similar incidents that may put the lives of passengers at risk.

Last November 27, an unidentified passenger forcefully opened the train door when it did not immediately open upon stopping at Vito Cruz station around 6:57 p.m., allowing other passengers to board the train based on the investigation of the LRMC.

The door, however, failed to close upon departure from Vito Cruz, while the passenger who forcefully opened it got off at the Quirino station.   (Aerol John Pateña/PNA)
