PNP orders intensified cyber patrol vs rumors on criminal gangs’ tactics

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has tapped its Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) to intensify its cyber patrolling efforts against disinformation on several social media platforms.

PNP Chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin said that a certain article about criminal gangs’ modus operandi circulating online was posted in a social media page created in 2016. Upon verification, it was found that it contained an edited picture intentionally posted to gain followers.

Azurin has already ordered all police units nationwide to intensify its efforts in monitoring any false information that may mislead the public and may incite social conflict.

“I call the attention of our public to be more mindful of what we are posting in our social media sites and refrain from spreading unverified information from unknown sources that may lead to public disturbances, panic and confusion,” Azurin said.

The PNP, through ACG, has requested the platform to take down the unofficial account.  – ag
