Solon eyes mandating gov’t offices to advertise with PTV

Baguio City Representative Mark Go is planning to file a proposal aimed at mandating government agencies to provide a percentage of their advertising budget to state-run People’s Television Network (PTV).

This is amid plans for PTV to become the primary news source with the capacity similar with the level of other broadcasting networks such as the United Kingdom’s British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles said this will be impossible unless the government invests in PTV.

“Puwede natin ‘yang tingnan sa Kongreso kung puwede nating i-mandate ang ating mga government entities if they can share a part of their advertising budget sa PTV,” Go said during the hearing of the proposed 2023 budget of the Office of the Press Secretary.

“At the same time, we will ask you to continuously improve ang ating istasyon so that ma-encourage naman ang mga government agencies na mag-advertise sa atin by increasing the reach ng ating istasyon sa ating mga kababayan,” he added.

Angeles earlier mentioned in the budget hearing looking into allocating government entities’ budget for PTV, as well as for other state-run TV station IBC-13 which did not get an approved budget under the 2023 National Expenditure Program.

If we want a BBC station, we can actually have two, pero gagastusan po natin to taon taon,” she said.

The Press Secretary also stressed the need for a budget that will allow PTV to create plantilla or regular positions for employees’ job security.

“Right now dahil mababa yung sweldo, hindi pa umaabot sa industry standards, ang kinukuha namin yung mga raw talent na we have high hopes of being able to develop into professional industry levels, kahit na ito pa lang yung aming na-o-offer na sweldo, ‘para sa bayan’ muna for now,” she said.  – With reports from Mark Fetalco-ag
