The number of recorded leptospirosis cases from January to August 27 this year has reached 1,770, according to the Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

The DOH said this year’s figures are 36% higher than the reported cases for the same period in 2021 at 1,299.

Metro Manila has the highest number of cases at 378 or 21% of the total, Region VI (Western Visayas) at 210 or 12%, and Region 2 (Cagayan Valley) at 195 or 11%.

Between July 31 and August 27, a total of 327 cases were recorded, with Metro Manila still having the most number at 112 or 34%, followed by Region XI (Davao Region) with 31 or 9%, and Region VI with 29 or 9% of the total cases.

The DOH said Regions II, V, VII, VIII, XI, and the Cordillera Administrative Region have “breached the alert and epidemic threshold within the past four morbidity weeks (July 31 to August 27, 2022).”

“However, no clustering was noted nationwide,” it added.

The fatality rate stood at 13.8%, with 244 deaths reported since the start of the year, including 14 in January, 11 in February, 23 in March, 32 in April, May and June with 29 each, 54 in July, and 52 in August.  – gb
