By Katrina Gracia Consebido

Department of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla has reaffirmed the country’s commitment in keeping its contributions to the global humanitarian agenda as he met with United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

In a meeting with Grandi in Geneva, Switzerland, Remulla mentioned the determination of the Philippines in playing a constructive role in multilateral humanitarian platforms, saying that its humanitarian policies are based on Filipino hospitality.

He said the Philippines is seeking to strengthen its engagements with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), of which the former has been consistently supporting.

He discussed with Grandi the country’s humanitarian priorities and recent initiatives, as he notes the willingness of the Philippines to accept refugees, including women and children who are affected by humanitarian crises.

The DOJ noted that the country has acceded to the 1961 Statelessness Convention, has enacted the Foundling Act, has established an inter-agency committee to protect persons of concern, and piloted the Complementary Pathways program for Rohingyas.

Gandi acknowledged the move of the Philippines which he said has been a good example in the Southeast Asian region. He also called on the need for further solidarity among international communities on humanitarian concerns. -ag
