Elderly, unvaccinated discouraged from attending Black Nazarene Feast

The Department of Health (DOH) discouraged on Friday, Jan. 6, senior citizens and unvaccinated individuals from attending the Feast of the Black Nazarene.

In an advisory, the DOH advised members of the vulnerable group, including the elderly, immunocompromised persons, and pregnant women to just stay at home.

It also reminded the public to only attend the festivities of Traslacion “when vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19.”

“As regular festivities for Traslacion or the feast of the Black Nazarene commence this 2023, we remind everyone to be responsible devotees,” DOH said.

The Health department also urged those who are experiencing flu-like symptoms to likewise stay at home and quarantine.

Meanwhile, those who are joining Traslacion are urged to bring extra masks, water, umbrella, extra pair of clothes, and sanitary kits.

DOH, however, still encouraged the public to celebrate the Feast of the Black Nazarene through “localized” and online gatherings to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“In light of this, the DOH reiterates the need to self-assess our risks as this will not only protect ourselves but as well as our loved ones and the community we belong in.”

Millions of Catholic devotees are expected to participate in the Feast of the Black Nazarene activities, according to the Manila Police District.
